Chapter Pennies & Mark Tokens
A sampling of pennies from Illinois chapters, past & present
In North America, jurisdiction over the degree of Mark Master Mason is vested in the various Royal Arch grand chapters. The keystone, the space in the keystone’s center, the token itself, and the penny, are all inexorably tied to the Mark Master degree, in terms of both its ritual and its heritage.
Each chapter commissions its mark token and/or penny to be struck in a design unique to that chapter, and issues the penny to each new candidate. The newly advanced Mark Master inscribes his unique mark within the center of the keystone on his respective Mark token. You will note that many of the sample pennies depicted below bear their former owners’ respective marks. Traditionally, a chapter penny was smaller and bore a design specific to the chapter. Over the past century, chapters have combined the elements of the two coins, and have effectively merged the two coins into one, although the ritual still refers separately to the chapter penny, mark token, and half-sheqel.
Please email images of Illinois chapters’ pennies to the Grand Webmaster. Thank you.

La Fayette Chapter No. 2, Chicago At the top is La Fayette Chapter’s new, limited edition silver token. Measuring 40.6 mm (1.6″) in diameter and 3.0 mm (0.12″) in thickness, this large token is 31.1 g (1 Troy ounce, or 1.097 avoirdupois or standard ounce) of 99.9% pure silver, allowing for unsurpassed detail and more than enough room for the owner to engrave his mark in the keystone. The token comes in brilliant uncirculated grade, complete with a display capsule, custom red velvet mounting card, maple wood stand and gift box. The token was minted with a 300-ton hydraulic press, and its edge is finished in 180 reeds at 2°. Penny images come courtesy of La Fayette Chapter No. 2. Fob images come courtesy of Companion Paul A. Many chapters use Masonic ceremonial “half shekel” slugs or U.S. quarter-dollars (to which the ritual also alludes, and which are only slightly smaller in diameter than half-sheqels). Other chapters, including La Fayette Chapter No. 2, use only genuine Israeli half-sheqel (₪0.50) coins. |
